The
S.S. Pemberton Orphanage List |
|
|
|
Following
is a list of girls trained at the RHMS, Dublin, shipped to Australia
on the S.S. Pemberton, which arrived in Port Phillip 14 May, 1849. In
the original document, a single table lists the information, separated
here for ease of display. The second half of the table is headed "Disposal
List (of the) Pemberton. The immigrants went to the Government Depot
26 May, 1849." Most of the girls were placed with employers in or
near Melbourne; the other placements were in Victoria.
See also the 'Irish Famine Monument, Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney,
Australia' site at http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/orphans/ships_vic.htm for
additional data on the subsequent careers of some of the Hibernian young
women who were on the SS Pemberton.
Registrations for births, marriages and deaths were made compulsory in Victoria from
1853 on. |
