School to be venue for 2007
World Cup and European Archery Grand Prix

The Duke of York's School will be the site and setting for the World Cup and European Archery Grand Prix to be held from 31 July to 5 August 2007.

The Grand National Archery Society have appointed Mr. Tom Wenham, Sports Work UK, as the Event Organiser for the non-specific archery elements. The Grand National Archery Society has a well drilled team running the archery competition supported the officials from FITA, the world governing body. A committee consisting of Mr. Ken Tranter of Dover Town Council, Lt. Col. Roger Say, Bursar of the Duke of York's Royal Military School, and Mr. Mike McFarnell, Chairman of the Kent Hotels and Restaurant Association provide a local impute to the event.
The idea of using the School's white rose emblem for the archery grand prix event arose while in the office of Lt.Col. Say. Under the title White Rose World Cup Archery, the white rose of York is an ideal crest for the occasion. It symbolises the perfect marriage of the ancient skill of archery with the military heritage of the Duke of York's School. This badge is not the official badge for the competition which will be published in February.

The idea of hosting the grand prix of world cup archery at Dover was the brainchild of Mike McFarnell. He said the inspiration came to him watching the announcement of the award of the 2012 Olympic Games.
"I raised the salute made to the French at the Battle of Agincourt and thought, Dover could host a pre-Olympic archery tournament. I called a meeting of key archery people following which the Grand National Archery Society asked if Dover would be prepared to host the European Archery Grand Prix in 2007."

To officials of the National Archery Society, he suggested the Duke of York's Royal Military School as a venue. "They said it offered better facilities than their national centre at Lilleshall."

This was a feather in the caps of the Dover Archers. Learning of the decision, a spokesman from Sports UK is reported to have said, "You don't know what you have done. Cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool have whole departments dedicated to acquiring these events."

The event has been upgraded to World Cup status, which is expected to involve an estimated 400 of the best archers in the world.

The amount given by Sports UK depends on match funding but is expected to be around £150,000. It is anticipated the event will generate over one million pounds for the local economy.

The Duke of York's School is the ideal location for the grand prix event. Its students will be on their summer vacation freeing up accommodation, catering and dining room facilities, and, more importantly, has ample space in its playing fields for tentage and the necessary butts.

Although the official launch of the World Cup and European Archery Grand Prix event is scheduled for February 2007, additional information is available from the website at http://www.dover-archery.net/  or by contacting tom@sportworksuk.com
